Tree planting initiative
In Kitui County, Kenya, a remarkable environmental transformation was being driven by Mountain of Charity Kenya, an organization founded by the visionary Nyamai Mbandu. Nyamai, born and raised in Kitui, had always felt a deep connection to his homeland and a profound concern for its future. Witnessing the harsh effects of deforestation and climate change on the region, he was determined to make a difference.
Kitui County, characterized by its semi-arid climate and frequent droughts, had long suffered from environmental degradation. Deforestation had led to severe soil erosion, water scarcity, and loss of biodiversity, which in turn affected agriculture, the primary livelihood for many residents. Inspired by the need to restore the environment and improve living conditions, Nyamai founded Mountain of Charity Kenya with a mission to lead a large-scale tree planting initiative.
Nyamai launched the "Greening Kitui Initiative," a comprehensive reforestation project aimed at planting millions of trees across the county. The initiative sought to address the environmental challenges while also empowering the local communities through education and sustainable practices. With the support of the Kitui County government, international environmental NGOs, and local community groups, the project began in earnest.
One of the key strategies of Mountain of Charity Kenya was to establish community tree nurseries throughout Kitui County. These nurseries were managed by local women’s groups and youth organizations, fostering a sense of ownership and providing economic opportunities. The nurseries produced a diverse array of seedlings, including indigenous species and fruit trees, ensuring ecological restoration and food security.
A central figure in this effort was Mama Wambui, a respected elder and leader of a women's group in the village of Kanziko. Mama Wambui embraced the initiative wholeheartedly, transforming her group’s small garden into a thriving nursery. She and her team cultivated thousands of seedlings, which were then distributed to farmers, schools, and community groups for planting. Her dedication and leadership inspired many others to join the movement.
Education was a cornerstone of the Greening Kitui Initiative. Mountain of Charity Kenya organized workshops and training sessions to teach sustainable farming practices, the importance of trees in the ecosystem, and methods to care for young trees. Schools played a vital role, incorporating environmental education into their curricula and involving students in tree planting activities. This not only helped in greening the landscape but also instilled a sense of environmental stewardship in the younger generation.
Nyamai also recognized the importance of addressing water scarcity to ensure the success of the tree planting efforts. The initiative included the construction of rainwater harvesting systems and small check dams to capture and store water during the rainy seasons. These measures provided a reliable water source for the young trees, significantly increasing their survival rate.
As the Greening Kitui Initiative progressed, its impact became increasingly visible. The once barren and eroded landscapes began to transform into lush green areas. Trees provided shade and improved soil fertility, leading to better crop yields for farmers. Fruit trees offered additional sources of nutrition and income, contributing to food security and economic resilience.
One of the most remarkable transformations occurred in the village of Kyusyani. Led by a dynamic youth group, the community planted over 20,000 trees within a year. The young members, driven by a sense of purpose and pride, not only revitalized their environment but also fostered a strong sense of community spirit and cooperation.
Nyamai’s vision and the collective efforts of Mountain of Charity Kenya brought about profound changes in Kitui County. The Greening Kitui Initiative not only restored the environment but also strengthened the social fabric and improved the livelihoods of the residents. The project became a model for sustainable development, showing how grassroots initiatives could address global challenges like climate change and deforestation.
The story of Mountain of Charity Kenya and Nyamai Mbandu’s unwavering dedication to tree planting in Kitui County stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. It demonstrates that with vision, collaboration, and perseverance, even the most daunting environmental challenges can be overcome, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
Extreme weather events, such as droughts, storms, and floods, are putting pressure on the ecosystems that farmers depend on and have led to crop failures and livestock deaths, hence causing economic losses and undermining the food security of rural people, especially in dry-land areas. Mountain of Charity is working with smallholder farmers to improve farming practices while safeguarding the environment by promoting sustainable agriculture/smart agriculture, Agro-forestry, the use of clean energy, restoring degraded areas and working on waste management.
Our focus is to ensure that we align with the SDGs No. 2 (Zero Hunger), No. 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), No. 7 (Affordable Clean Energy), and No. 13 (Climate Action).
Our objectives
1. To conserve God's creation and making.
2. To actively promote and advocate for productive management of the environment.
3. To actively and peacefully oppose poor land management practices and demonstrate proper land management.
